Middletown – Valerie Longfellow has been elected to the Board of
Directors of Crystal Run Village Inc., a provider of services for the
integration and empowerment of people with disabilities. She is a
Registered Nurse in Obstetics (OB) at St. Anthony Community Hospital in
Warwick.
Her work history includes nursing in high-risk labor and delivery,
antepartum and postpartum care, and pediatric care at hospitals in Port
Jervis, Rochester and Williamsville. She was a childbirth education
coordinator in Franklin County, VT where she was responsible for making
home visits to high risk OB patients and mother-baby visits for early
discharge. Longfellow’s Bachelors of Science degree in nursing is from
Niagara University in Niagara Falls, NY.
Longfellow, the parent of a child with a disability, has been an
advocate and active participant in the development of services and
opportunities for young people. She lives in Warwick with husband Carl
and their 3 children. By being a board member she feels she can make a
connection with other families that can benefit from her contribution.
“As the parent of a disabled child, you know that support from community
service organizations is essential,” Longfellow said. “Knowing that
other families exist who share your experience and can offer practical
help is invaluable.” Eight of the thirteen members of the Crystal Run
Village, Inc. board of directors are either parents or siblings of
people receiving services from the agency.
Crystal Run Village, Inc. is a non-profit, independent provider of a
broad range of residential and habilitation services to more than 700
people with intellectual and physical disabilities living in Orange,
Sullivan and Rockland Counties. The human services agency headquartered
in Middletown employs approximately 840 people and has an operating
budget of over $29-million.
