Self Advocacy Group Seeks Empty Inkjet Cartridges

Empty inkjet cartridges can be money in the bank for the “Wishes and Dreams” self-advocacy group comprised of residents of Crystal Run Village, Inc., a human services agency providing services for the integration and empowerment of people with disabilities in Orange, Rockland and Sullivan Counties.

The empty inkjet cartridge collection effort is as unusual as it is practical; it helps not only the self-advocacy group, but the environment as well. According to Linda Nadel, newly elected president of the organization, recycling help from the community will allow members of the group to meet their financial objectives so that they are able to attend educational conventions. “Going to the meetings will help us better understand ways that, we (people with disabilities), can speak for ourselves,” Nadel said. Members of the group attended the 2000 Annual New York State Self Advocacy Conference in Albany in September. More than 700 people with disabilities attended the two-day event, she added.

Shelly Fabiszak an advisor for the group explained that the members are determined to become more and more involved as citizens. The goal is for them to have control over their own lives through increased knowledge of their civil rights and greater understanding of their responsibilities to mankind. Giving back to their communities in ways similar to other civic organizations, such as: Rotary Club; Kiwanis Club International; and the Lions Club, is a way for them to do this, Fabiszak explained.

Some of the charitable giving activities that the members of the self advocacy group have been involved in include toy drives, the collection and distribution of recycled clothing and household goods to people in need, and meals-on-wheels.

Crystal Run Village, Inc., with an operating budget of over $22-million, has a reputation for skilled management, vigorous program development, astute provision of care and financial stability. The agency, headquartered in Middletown, employs nearly 650 employees.

To receive a fax on the more than 46 models of empty inkjet cartridges from 8 manufacturers that are acceptable for recycling, call Shelly Fabiszak or Michael Bodner at Open Vistas Day Habilitation Program: 845-692-2811, Monday – Friday 9 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. or email them at vistas@frontiernet.net.
