Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Throughout the month of March, OPWDD and New York State have joined with the rest of the country in raising awareness of the unique talents and contributions people with developmental disabilities bring to our communities.
To increase public awareness throughout the year, we have developed awareness and education initiatives including EmployAbility and WelcoME which focus on the abilities, contributions, accomplishments, and inclusion of people with developmental disabilities. This March, the 30th anniversary of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we are featuring an on-line collection of stories – people with developmental disabilities doing great things in, with and for their communities. These stories, available on the OPWDD website, illustrate the immeasurable value provided to communities throughout the state by the people we support. If you have not already done so, I invite you to visit OPWDD’s website to view individuals telling their stories.
Please join me in celebrating the abilities and accomplishments of our friends and neighbors with developmental disabilities and the dedicated families, advocates, direct support professionals, volunteers and providers whose support helps people with developmental disabilities live richer lives.
