Families join the #bFair2DirectCare Coalition

From the NY Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation:

Families Join the #bFair2DirectCare Coalition

The #bFair2DirectCare Coalition is very pleased that families of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have joined the effort.

SWAN (the StateWide Advocacy Network), a coalition of independent family groups announced it has joined with #bFair2DirectCare to request accelerating funding in the new state budget to pay direct support professionals a living wage. SWAN, an independent all volunteer organization that accepts no government or private agency money, was founded in 2016 to ensure families have a voice in every policy decision and implementation affecting their loved ones with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The inclusion of family members to the coalition is timely as just last week, #bFair2DirectCare released new survey numbers showing the staffing crisis at non-profits that support New Yorkers with developmental disabilities is getting even worse, as competition for their workers stiffens from retail, food service and big box stores.

This issue will be a highlight of the joint New York Alliance and The Arc New York legislative and policy forum to be held February 12th and 13th in the Hart Lounge of The Egg in Albany.

The New York Alliance’s public testimony on the proposed 2018-19 Executive budget will also focus on the worsening staffing crisis and the ongoing advocacy effort to implement a living wage.
